Activity:  Introduce students to career paths in the science of seals.


Pre-Activity:  Homework to visit jobs web site and search GIS and marine biology.


Do Now:  Pop Quiz (Assessment Essay): What job did you like most and why?  Which did you like least and why?


Aim:  To ensure that students tie their work in class to the potential for a career path in science, and to help them learn about science in working society.


Major Assignment:  Examine federal job classifications, career paths based on knowledge, skills and abilities, and its relation to our daily processes.


Processes, Skills, Goals:  Reading, writing, remembering, extending knowledge, planning for the future using the present, and the perspective of the working scientist.


Content:  Federal jobs classification system as one indication of how work is parsed in society.


Instructions:  Review student findings from USAJOBS, emphasizing the growth of a career based upon past performance (which starts from our class).  Discuss job classifications related to geography and marine science, and tie the details back to the curriculum for the rest of the semester,


Materials:  USAJOBS example jobs in slide show, including photos of activities and output, along with 0150 classification system. 


Guiding Questions:  Was is the main difference between third grade and eleventh?  Time until work life begins.  You are 80% done with public school.  What do you want to take in college?  Where does it lead?  Which are the highest paid (and most fun for you) positions available?


Homework Essay:  If a teacher is a talent agent for science in society, then what talents do you have and where could they lead you (vision of yourself in the future)?  What are the KSAs that go with your vision of your future?
