Activity:  Create concept maps of a career choice.


Pre-Activity:  Define personal inventory of talents.


Do Now:  Choose one of the following jobs: veterinarian, fishery biologist, science policy advisor, project administrator, support staff person, geographer, educator, writer, artist


Aim:  To create groups of common interest and expand knowledge of that interest.


Major Assignment:  Students work to assemble concept maps of what is important to their particular job interest, including the appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Processes, Skills, Goals:  Planning for the future, sharing understanding of information with others, written and oral communication, web of science tasks and jobs.


Content:  Science in society as an economic activity, as well as a life choice with prerequisite KSAs.


Instructions:  Assemble students into groups based on common interest in a specific job, and have them create concept maps of the issues affecting their job choice.


Materials:  Paper, drawing implements.


Guiding Questions:  What are the important aspects of a job choice in terms of prerequisites, job tasks, growth over time, and impact on changing society and the earth. 


Homework:  Continue thinking about the issues and come prepared to add more information to the concept map.  Research people who do that job.  How did they get it?  Why do they like it?  What don't they like about it?
