Activity:  Peer assessment of concept maps on roles of scientist in society.


Pre-Activity:  Completion of concept maps.


Do Now:  Prepare your final version of concept maps to be graded by classmates.


Aim:  Understand that science is based up peer-review of communicated evidence.


Major Assignment:  Individual, personal judgements assemble into a societal judgement of merit.


Processes, Skills, Goals:  Analysis and judgement of the work of others, and oneself.


Content:  Science as peer-review process.


Instructions:  Discuss criteria for judging scientific performance in the classroom.  Distribute assessment worksheet and have students assess each other's work.


Materials:  Assessment worksheet, completed concept maps.


Guiding Questions:  What is important about concept maps?  What does one need to know about a science job in society?  How would you want to be graded on your map?  What should one look for in others?  What it is about science that makes it harder to define success?  Or easier?


Homework:  Find conferences in your personal or group area of interest and read their programs, sponsor web sites, and mission statements.
