Activity:  Introduction to research on and management of local waters.


Pre-Activity:  Research on local waters and selection of topic.


Do Now:  Write on board (or post): water body, research topic, and association (s) studying it.


Aim:  Create understanding of science and policy of local waters and how they affect seal life.


Major Assignment:  Share findings of who is studying what, how, and why, especially including maps or spatial analysis.


Processes, Skills, Goals:  Researching, summarizing, and sharing science in our local community.


Content:  Information about science in our local waters.


Instructions:  Have students share what they found.  Be prepared with a list of water bodies and science studies.


Materials:  Slide show of water bodies and science studies, including topics and pertinence to seals.


Guiding Questions:  Why are those particular organizations studying the science of those particular water bodies?  Do they show any mention of seal life?  Who joins those associations?  What do they do?
