Activity:  Artistic Expression of Science


Pre-Activity:  Homework to create artistic expression of course materials.


Do Now:  Show or explain your artistic expression of science in your community. 


Aim:  Expansion of creative skills to enhance understanding and recall of science content.


Major Assignment:  Create and revise artistic expression of science topic.


Processes, Skills, Goals:  Provide opportunity for expression of alternate interactions with science materials.


Content:  Vocabulary and processes used in global and regional maps of environmental phenomena and seal behavior expressed with artistic talent.


Instructions:  Provide options and explanations of the variety of creative expressions available to tell a science story, including painting, sculpture, poetry, music, storytelling, and whatever a student wishes to express.


Materials:  Examples of the above.


Guiding Questions:  Who thinks of science as an expression of creativity?  How do scientists solve problems?  Is it just tools, or are there creative innovations for tools and data?  What modes of communication are prevalent in various fields of human endeavor and why do they work in that application?  Why does a student essay reflect many things more than just the words?


Homework:  Examine in close detail a poster from the Bronx River Association and try to explain how it makes you feel and how it accomplishes that effect.
