Activity:  Google Earth Lab.

Pre-Activity:  Discussion of mapping as a tool to tell a story in a peer review process.

Do Now:  Why do you think a picture is worth a thousand words?

Aim:  Higher Grades on Papers with Less Effort

Major Assignment:  Learn how to create and insert digital maps with captions into papers.

Processes, Skills, Goals:  Fundamentals of observation using interactive digital air photos, creative choices of one's perception of reality to tell a focused story, using images to support text in an essay, geographical analysis using a hierarchical approach.

Content:  Geographical Analysis.

Instructions:  Explain GE lab and ask students to follow its instructions.  Keep them on task to complete the assignment.  The key issue is that science is about observation and interpretation.  Assist them in creating captions by asking them what they see in the air photo and what it might mean for a seal.

Materials:  Computers with online access and GE installed, lab assignment, slide show of how to use GE.

Guiding Questions:  What is the most important thing in that air photo to you?  ... to a seal?  What story would you like to tell about seals and your neighborhood?

Homework:  Complete captions and a paragraph for each that tells a story about your neighborhood and seals.
