Activity:  Learn about remote sensing in daily life.

Pre-Activity:  Discussion of remote sensing.

Do Now:  Discuss what you saw on remote sensing and weather.

Aim:  To expand our understanding of remote sensing tools in observing and reporting on weather.

Major Assignment:  Examine common remote sensing tools in daily use by citizens.

Processes, Skills, Goals:  Research into advanced technology and its application to observe environmental conditions.  Begin to learn limits and capabilities of specific technologies.

Content:  Remote Sensing Basics With Applications

Instructions:  Review what students found on their own on remote sensing in weather, and ensure that appropriate fundamental topics are covered.  Discuss specific costs and benefits of the use of remote sensing technology to understand weather.  Discuss types of remote sensing used in weather.  Relate weather remote sensing to personal senses.  Add time component.  Marvel at the power of the human brain as a sensing technology to interpret remote sensing technology.

Materials:  Short videos showing remote sensing technology in weather, notes on remote sensing technologies in weather, costs, benefits, and risks associated with reliance on technology for weather reporting.

Guiding Questions:  What did you find out about remote sensing in weather?  What human capacities were extended?  What was sacrificed?  How much do they cost?  What do they mean for human skill and economic work?  Which is worse: human error or machine error?  What is the range of their abilities?  How do scientists and citizens develop KSAs for their appropriate use?  Do citizens need to know about them?  Why or why not?  What other remote sensing weather tools can be accessed for analysis and reporting purposes?

Homework:   Essay - write a story about a seal using remote sensing tools to assist in their own productive lives.
