With the selection of the design team for the United Nations Secretariat, the name Julio Vilamajó was introduced to the United States public in the late 1940s. Despite this high profile project and posthumous praise by the New York Museum of Modern Art in the publication Latin American Architecture Since 1945, recognition of the architect declined in the subsequent decades within the United States. However, within Uruguay, the architect and his works have been the objects of sustained appreciation.
