The emphasis of most photographs in the exhibit is on landscape or architecture. People rarely constitute the focus of the images. If we look carefully, however, we find men and women in almost all photographs. We cannot recognize them as individuals, but these involuntary and unidentified models—miniscule, blurred or transparent like ghosts—hold in their gestures and body language the spirit and the archetypal vital energy of those who inhabited and gave life to this nineteenth-century São Paulo.
